Title :Back Bench Student (2013) Star Cast : Mahat Raghavendra, Piaa Bajpai Director : Madhura Sridhar Reddy Producer : MVK Reddy Genre : Romance Releasing on : March 15, 2012. Review : On one relaxed sunday we wish to whip up a biryani and we keep all the ingredients ready and suddenly a mischievous thought germinates…why don’t we mix flour into it? Carrots are common, why don’t we use mangoes instead because it is mango season. How about brinjals? If we stop using the necessary stuff required for Biryani and use what we like instead, it will become a Kichidi undoubtedly. It is the same with movies. We think of conveying one thing and we end up making something else just to add one element or the other to please a certain section of the audience, or to keep with the trend or for churning out a commercial angle. Karthik (Mahat Raghavendra) is a Back Bench Student, always indulging in fun frolic and joins an engineering college just to satisfy them. But what purpose does it serve? he fails in 16 subjects but at home gives an impression that all is well. Karthik has a love story, he has fallen in love with Priyanka (Archana Kavi) and she too likes him. Her dream is to finish engineering here and do her post graduation in America. Her family too supports her decision but on one end she goes through an emotional struggle. She cannot leave Karthik and at the same time she knows her priority is education. Karthik is against her leaving but she goes to reach her goal. Karthik is upset, sulks for a few days but moves on with his life as usual. He now moves closer to Chaitra (Pia Bajpai)and at home his family gets to know that he couldn’t clear the subjects. There is an altercation at home and he quits challenging that he will make a life of his own. Just when Chaitra is happy with Karthik, Priyanka returns for Karthik. Just because someone fails in exams, we cannot say for sure that they will fail in life too. Studies are different, life is different and the story is woven around this point. Veedi Break Up Love Story is the tagline of this Back Bench Student. To be fair we can say that the film has concentrated less on Back Bench Student and more on the tagline..i.e his break up love story. That marks has no relation with intelligence has become a sub plot and not the main plot. We do not know when the story begins, when it takes a twist and when it becomes a triangular love story. Everything is predictable and routine, one gets sidelined and other sacrifices their place for that someone. So eventually we go to the film thinking it is a class troom story but get something else in return. Mahat Raghavendra does a good job but it isn’t so great that we had to import him from a neighbouring state for that role. In scenes when he needs to show his zeal, he looks laid back and in scenes when he needs to go slow, he tends to go overboard. Archana Kavi did not express her feelings at all, maybe the producer did not pay her enough, she was stingy expressing emotions. Pia Bajpai is fine but she did not make a great pair with Mahat. There are two heroines but not one could elevate the scene. The hero lacked clarity, Pia doesn’t know what he wants and so does Karthik, he himself lacks that point. He bashes up a guy because he cheats his girlfriend but then what did Karthik do? isn’t that holier than thou attitude? He immediately fell in love with another girl as soon as the first one leaves abroad. If the hero’s character itself is not clear and justified how can the director execute the entire story with clarity? The scenes are not sharp enough and looks as if people are teaching the audience a few things about life. There is an influence of Happy Days and Ali is suitable in his role. Brahmanandam does nothing to lift the spirits of the audiences, he only drowns them in sorrow. We do not know why he came and why he left, music is by Sunil Kashyap and that is not worth discussing. Our favourite Jagada Jagada and Raja Dhi Raja has been mercilessly massacred. Cinematography is good, though the essence and feel of the story is lost, the cinematographer made a good attempt to portray the visuals well. The director failed in his subject while narrating a story about a guy who failed to clear 16 subjects.
